We all know that Summer is pretty much wedding season and what to wear comes a bit easier since it’s warmer and you don’t really have to worry about showing some skin! Now that it’s a bit crisper at night – what to wear to a wedding might become a bigger question, at least it is for me. We are attending a wedding in a few weeks and let’s just say – I’m not expecting the heat wave we experienced last weekend! I have a few options in my closet, but none that I’m overly thrilled about and honestly I don’t want to buy another dress just to have it hang there for years on end, so I’ve thought about trying Rent The Runway! Trust me – this isn’t a sponsored post – I am just really intrigued with the concept!
The hardest weddings to dress for, for me personally, are cocktail attire/not formal. I just feel like the possibilities are endless so I start to panic!
I wanted to go with colors that are richer and feel warmer – if it is a brighter color, I wanted it to have a sleeve of some kind. Here are my picks for an October wedding.
Lela Rose – Retail $1610, Rent $40
ML Monique Lhuillier– Retail $498, Rent $40
Prabal Gurung – Retail $2100, Rent $40
Roksanda Ilinicic – Retail $1496, Rent $35
Nha Khanh – Retail $595, Rent $30
My concern with renting is the sizing!! What if I order the wrong size and the other size doesn’t fit either! I obviously kept my price range under $40 since I’m not going to be keeping the dress, I don’t want to be that wasteful!
To combat the dilemma of paying for a dress that I don’t even get to keep, I’ve rounded up a few possibilities that I would actually purchase.
Have you ever used Rent the Runway? Where do you like to shop for dresses?
Hope you all have a great Thursday!
Linking up with Natalie and Annie!
xo,
Girl we are always on the same page! Thank you thank you for this post! I have a wedding on Saturday. I probably should have started this earlier but I've always been intrigued by Rent the Runway you haven't used it yet before? I am all of the lace details right now! That Monique Lhuillier is gorgeous!
You picked some killer dresses! Love these!

LOVE all the dresses, especially the LACE! Oh my goodness, so do divine! I would 100% rent the Prabal dress, so perfectly me ;)! You have fabulous taste friend!
I'm in love with the purple Tadashi dress!
LOVE that pink ombre dress! Gorgeous! And that purple Tadashi dress… beautiful! All these are amazing picks I would totally wear! Now I just need a wedding to go to… LOL!

Those dresses are gorgeous! I always found that even in the chillier months when going to a wedding, I just added a wrap to my cocktail dress and a nice coat if it was winter. Because once the drinks are flowing and I hit the dance floor I start to get really hot anyway 😛
I've never used rent the runway, but everyone I know who has, has had nothing but great experiences!
I've been wanting to try RTR, too but have the same fear! I have heard that you get two different dresses in two different sizes… but still, what if neither of them fit?!? Love the Nha Khanh and the BB Dakota dresses!
i love all the ones with the lace!! lace trimmings just make anything so gorgeous

I LOVE the orange one, sooo cute!

I used it once and I loved the service… but I always want to just buy the dress!! Seems way less stressful… but I do love that it's an option!!
These are such fun dresses! I love love love the lace Nha Khanh!!!
I've never used rent the runway but I have always wanted to! These are all so gorgeous! I can't even pick a favorite!

Loooooove your picks! The dresses are SO adorable! It's amazing how quickly wedding attire adds up though, yikes!
Thank you for this post!! We have a wedding in Miami in November and they put "smart elegant" for the attire on the invitation. I have been to quite a few weddings in my life, but I have no idea what that means. Love the red BB Dakota and that purple dress. I hope that you are having a great day so far too! 🙂
really pretty picks here! i need one for a blogging awards ceremony, and these fit the bill!
oh my, that purple Tadashi is amazing. if I actually went to weddings I'd be all over it. You know I love RTR!
I love the idea of rent the runway! I have friends that swear by it, especially for weddings and special events. The only time I used it, I actually ordered the blue lace Nha Khanh dress but didn't end up wearing it bc it fit weird on me. That's the only down side of RTR, but at least you get to send it back and get a refund if you don't end up wearing it.
I didn't have much of a choice in my most recent wedding attire since I was a bridesmaid haha, but RTR is always my go-to for special event dresses! That lace dress has been on my favorites list for awhile, I'm just waiting for the perfect occasion!
Great choices! My cousin uses RTR all of the time and LOVES it! I think it's a great concept too, I say go for it!!
omg. i was just typing a novel of a comment, and somehow blogger reloaded and lost the whole thing UGHHH. trying to remember the best:
"Ahhh, I'm always so 50/50 when it comes to Rent the Runway. For obvious reasons, spending $40 on a dress that will never be yours, possibly worn previously by someone else even if professionally cleaned, and the fact that its $40 for ONE night only! and you have to send it back! but then again, you spend $40 of your own money for a dress that you'll wear once, and then it sits in the closet. so really it's like the same thing. i think because you have to give it back, i'd prefer to buy my own even though I know i'll never wear it again lol. i'd be concerned about the sizing as well, i'm always so iffy when it comes to dress sizes because i can fit in a few different sizes depending on cut! personally, i love the floral print dress that you linked to by the designer adrianna papell. so GORGEOUS."
Ahhh I just about used RTR for my bestie's bach party in Austin, I had even clicked purchase and then I canceled my purchase at the last possible moment because I just couldn't get over getting a dress and not being able to keep it and wear it again. I am so on the fence, on one hand I think the idea is genius and on the other I would rather have a dress that can go in my closet after I'm done wearing it.
I guess I can justify it as a chance to wear a gorgeous designer dress that I wouldn't buy for myself!
I'm loving that red BB Dakota one – it would look gorgeous on you with your dark hair!
I almost used RTR for Ryan's sister's wedding, but just decided to wear my old trusty black lace dress. Anything with lace is a winner in my book- I especially love that red BB Dakota dress. So cute for fall!
That purple one is gorgeous!! Love all the lace ones too, these are all perfect for weddings!

I'm in the same dilemma! We have a wedding next weekend, and while I probably could wear something in my closet, I just need an excuse to do some shopping. 🙂 These all are great options – I'm interested to hear your experience with Rent the Runway if you give it a shot!
I love the 2nd one… longer sleeves & lace… beautiful!
I'm a huge fan of RTR and rent all the time for weddings. Especially now that they have so many options in the $30-$50 rental range! As far as sizing, they do let you chose a backup size if it's the first time you're renting from a certain designer, so I find that helpful. Also their customer service is fantastic. I once ended up receiving a dress that was too small and they overnighted me the next size up, free of charge! I'd say, just give yourself a 2 day buffer for your delivery date, just in case the dress doesn't work out!
All very cute picks! I like the idea because I know when I have an event or wedding, or whatever and I want to look good, I easily spend anywhere from $50-$100, and then it's not like I can wear it immedietaly again, right? So it just sits there…let me know if you try it!
Its so funny you posted this bc I have an event in a few weeks and I was looking at RTR yesterday and pretty much decided on the Lela Rose dress! So funny!
As I scrolled down this list I seriously liked each one better than the last. These are some serious dresses. I absolutely love the orange Roksanda Ilinic. It would look amazing on you. I've never tried Rent The Runway so I'm not help, but I have heard good things about it.
prosecco in the park
I'm all about the lace right now so I love your choices! That second blue lace dress is gorgeous, but I also love the purple Tadashi! If you have some time to shop, HauteLook sometimes has amazing deals on dresses.
Fall weddings are some of the hardest! Love everything that you picked – especially the Nha Khanh! xo
Southern Style
I did Rent the Runway for a formal wedding earlier this year…I didn't want to buy a gown that I'd never wear again, so I tried RTR. I was suuuuuper nervous about it, but it worked out GREAT! Btw, I love love love that ombre three-quarter sleeve dress! Can't wait to see what you decide to wear!
oooh so many great dresses and i have an october wedding to attend, now could I rent a dress from them and receive it in time for the wedding on the 12th?? now i have the dilemma of selecting from so many great dresses
The rent prices are excellent compared to the retail price. I do always cringe at the amount of dresses I have that have been worn once but I still manage to buy more when a special event rolls around.
Love all of them! I love love love rent the runway!
I think the 2 lace overlay dresses are really pretty and those don't tend to be my style so that is saying something. The Tadashi dress is a keeper.
great picks. i especially like the red with the sleeves and lace.
I've been dying to use RTR! And what's nice is that for your first time you get a special discount too. A lot of sorority sisters used it for our senior formal and they all had wonderful things to say about RTR.
WOW the first dress is amazing. I haven't tried RTR but have friends that have and swear by it.
I sat next to one of the founders of RTR at a wedding right before they launched, and we all agreed it was the MOST amazing concept! I have used them before and the pricing, the fit and the customer service is EXCELLENT! I cannot say enough good things about them!
Love all the lace details! We have a wedding to attend in just a couple weeks and I have no idea what to wear! So this is helpful 🙂
These are some great choices and really cute! Plus, more realistic for my budget.
I've sent a ridiculous about of time on RTR this week too! We have a January wedding (in Florida) and it's kind of the same weird thing of not really knowing what to wear. I think the 4th dress down is my favorite- though I think you would look gorgeous in all of them!
Also, on a side note, aren't some of the pictures people post on the site so hilarious?? I saw so many where you couldn't even really see the dress! haha
I've used it before and LOVEDD it! They let you pick 2 sizes so you don't have to worry about it not fitting 🙂 I did it for a very formal occasion where I knew I wouldn't need a floor length again
I'm sure someone has already said this, but I think with RTR, you can get two sizes to try on to make sure one fits you! and I am obsessed with that Lela Rose dress. I think it is such a great idea to just rent a dress rather than spending money on a dress you won't wear again!

I really liked the dresses that you picked! I think that the dresses that you picked for actual purchase are super pretty and could be worn again and might be a better investment for the long term since you could use it for multiple occasions. But I do think the idea of renting a dress is fun too!
So many beautiful dresses to choose from but my favorite is that exquisite blue Tadashi!!

That red BB Dakota dress is GORGEOUS! As soon as I saw that on the website, I immediately added it to my cart. It's soo pretty!
Love them all but those last two are my faves!!! I would totally rent the runway!!!
lace lace lace! i love all these looks – especially the shine of the first dress. very different! 🙂
I love that first dress and then the purple one!
Never rented one before.
I really love the blue Monique Lhuillier!! With my luck I'd probably like spill red wine on it or something lol! I think I'd be afraid to rent if something happened to it. It is an awesome idea though. I love all of the options you would consider purchasing. You would look gorgeous in all of them! Esp that last one! XO
I've never used rent the runway but I've used a rental place called the Frock Shop out of Chicago and they have always been so helpful and even have sent a second dress in a different size for a backup! Sometimes it's nice to have that name brand look for less! I do love the red lace one though if you were to buy a dress! 🙂
Love all of these! I have a wedding to go to next week and still hadn't figured out what to wear! I forgot about Rent the Runway!
