Happy Tuesday, friends! We are coming off an extra long Labor Day mini getaway in Connecticut. For how close Connecticut is to us, I’ve actually never had a proper trip there and I didn’t realize what I was missing! We met my cousin and his family at Waters Edge Resort & Spa on Thursday and proceeded to have a fantastic family filled weekend.
A friend of mine went to the resort over 4th of July weekend and absolutely raved about everything they did and how the accommodations were. With three different restaurants, direct beach access and a pool – there really wasn’t a reason we wouldn’t venture there for the long weekend. Westbrook, Connecticut is a little over 2 hours from Boston, which is just incredibly close to have such a beautiful resort so close by! With a 3:00 PM check in, we hit the road right after lunch and right in line with Sophia’s nap, so when we arrived at 2:30 and found our room was already ready – we were pleasantly surprised. Of course masks are mandatory and they have plenty of hand sanitizing stations around the resort. Our suite was perfect with a separate living room and a door to the bedroom that closed – perfect for putting Sophia down and still enjoying the evening.
My cousin and the fam arrived just after us and we all immediately hit the beach! You are given a different color bracelet each day you go and they do give you towels for the beach and pool. Thursday afternoon was the only time it felt a bit over crowded at the pool and even though masks aren’t mandatory on the beach or while in the water, we felt more comfortable having them on until we could have our space. I overheard that they were operating at 50% capacity in certain areas – specifically the pool and beach areas, but even though it was a long weekend, it felt less crowded with each day we were there.
We opted for dinner at the hotel each night – it was just easier with the kids and Sunset Bar & Grill had a nice menu. It was a quick dinner because two very curious toddlers just wanted to explore and you know that means adults inhale their dinner while juggling keeping them entertained.
It’s nice to travel with people that are on the same schedule as you, so the next morning we hit Seaview Bistro for breakfast before spending the morning at the pool & beach. The weather could not have been more perfect and we just kept moving from one to the other tiring the kids out. We had a double beach and pool day since we took them out after nap time too! There is seriously nothing more convenient than having the beach less than 5 minutes from your room!
We learned our lesson from the night before and pre-ordered dinner so that we could sit out on the lawn and let them run freely while we actually enjoyed dinner. Wouldn’t you know, this is when they decided to sit still and eat! It was a perfect dinner followed by a mom’s night out. After the kids were down, Kathy & I went to the outside bar area for a quick drink and catch up. I highly suggest if you go with another couple friend with kids that you divide the weekend and each get a night out! They have live music on Saturday’s and Sunday’s but it wasn’t overbearing and while the pool area may have been more crowded, the outside bar area had plenty of space for social distancing and we didn’t have anyone near us.
The next morning we explored the grounds a little more since vacations do not mean early wake ups are out! After breakfast we drove to the Mystic Aquarium which is only 30 minutes from the resort. We pre-ordered our tickets a few days and had a timed ticket entry for 10:00 AM when they opened. I absolutely loved that the majority of the aquarium was outdoors and with a one way directional it was a perfect morning.
We ventured 10 minutes further into Mystic and felt like it was a must to have Mystic Pizza! We were pleasantly surprised that there wasn’t a wait and were seated right away. The pizza was delicious and made us nostalgic for the movie which we watched later in the weekend! It was another perfect excuse for dinner outside & saying “goodnight ocean” which Sophia loved to do!
On our last morning we ventured off the resort for breakfast at Christy’s. They converted part of the parking lot for outdoor dining and this breakfast was out of this world! Sophia nibbled on one of the best chocolate pancakes I’ve ever had, so Gary and I were happy to finish it off for her. The eggs were delicious and the iced coffee was the best of the trip!
Since checkout wasn’t until 11:00 AM we ventured to the pool for one more dip before one more lunch on the lawn and heading home. Obviously the most comfortable place to relax is on mom!
While vacation with a toddler is hardly relaxing , it was the perfect escape with our family and a great send off to a truly unforgettable Summer!

What a great weekend. It is always easier traveling with someone who understands your schedule and child’s needs.
Oh wow, what a wonderful trip. So happy you were able to get away and to such a nice relaxing place. Yes some places are better at handling families with children then others. And so much good food! You guys looked like you had a great time and great photos too!
